Load calculations and service upgrades
NEC 220.57 sets how EV charging load is counted in the service calculation: the larger of 7,200 W or the charger’s nameplate rating. EV chargers are treated as continuous loads, so the branch circuit and overcurrent protection are sized at 125% of the maximum load. If the calculation exceeds the service rating, the options are a service upgrade or load management.
